Renewable energy
Renewable energy makes use of natural resources such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides and geothermal heat, which may be naturally replenished. Renewable energy technologies include solar power, wind power, hydroelectric power (or hydro for short), biomass and biofuels for transportation. Renewable energy has much lower levels of greenhouse gas emissions than fossil-fuel energy sources, and potentially offers sources of clean energy that we can continue to use indefinitely. Renewable energy technologies (excluding large-scale hydro) together provided about 3.4 per cent of global power generation by 2007; large-scale hydropower represented a further 15 per cent of all electricity generation by 2007, source British Council, report August 2008
Hydroelectric power
Flowing water from streams or rivers has been used for many centuries to perform tasks such as driving mills and machinery.
Biomass and biofuels
Biomass is a term used to refer to material from trees or other plants that can be used to generate usable energy.

Mankind has been using the wind for centuries to produce mechanical power for milling grain and pumping water.

Solar thermal power is an approach where energy from the sun is used directly to heat an energy carrier, most often water.

Tidal power refers to technologies which are able to convert the energy of tides into electricity (or other useful forms of power).
